The Monastery of Hosios Loukas is one of the finest Byzantine monuments, dating back to the 11th century A.D. It is situated on an idyllic slope on the western foot of Mt. Elikona (Mt. Helicon), close to Steiri.

It was founded by Hosios (blessed, venerable) Loukas, «the Steirian» (896 – 953 A.D.). Hosios Loukas was capable of curing sickness and was also a soothsayer. He foretold the invasion of the Bulgarians in Greece and the conquest of Crete by the Emperor Romanus.

The Monastery consists of two large churches, the church of the Theotokos and a larger cathedral church, or Katholikon, the monks’ living quarters, the Altar and Hosios Loukas’ tomb.
